Full Botanical Name:
Senecio peregrinus

Common Names:
String of Dolphins, Dolphin Necklace

Country and/or Region of Origin:
Senecio peregrinus is a hybrid species, derived from cross-breeding other Senecio species such as Senecio rowleyanus (String of Pearls) and Senecio articulatus. It does not have a natural habitat per se but carries traits suitable for semi-arid environments similar to those of its parent species in southern Africa.

Growing Conditions in Native Habitat:
The parent species of Senecio peregrinus typically grow in arid, rocky environments, receiving occasional rains and lots of sunlight.

Care Information:

  • Light:
Prefers bright, indirect light. Can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially in the morning or late afternoon, but intense midday sun might cause leaf burn.
  • Ideal Room:
A south-facing window with some shade is ideal. It also does well in bright offices or sunny kitchens where natural light is abundant.
  • Feeding:
Fertilize with a diluted succulent or cactus fertilizer every 2 months during the growing season. Reduce feeding to once in the winter or not at all if growth slows significantly.
  • Humidity:
Low humidity is sufficient, typical of indoor environments.
  • Ideal Temperature:
Best kept between 60°F and 80°F (15°C to 27°C). It is not frost-tolerant and should be protected from extreme cold.
  • Watering:
Water thoroughly but infrequently, allowing the soil to completely dry out between waterings. Overwatering is a common issue and can lead to root rot.
  • Pet/Child Safe:
Toxic if ingested. Contains saponins, which can cause gastrointestinal upset in pets and children.
  • Soil:
Requires well-draining sandy or gritty soil, ideal for cacti and succulents.
  • Propagation:
Easily propagated by stem cuttings or leaf cuttings. Plant the cuttings in soil and keep them lightly moist until roots develop.
  • Eventual Height and Spread:
Trails or hangs down several feet if given the opportunity, with individual trails growing 2-3 feet long.
  • Growth Rate:
Moderate, with optimal conditions fostering quicker growth.
  • Pests and Treatment:
Watch for pests such as aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary.
  • Repotting:
Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant outgrows its pot. Spring is the best time for repotting.
  • Pruning:
Pruning is generally not necessary unless you want to control the size or remove unhealthy parts of the plant.
  • Folk Law:
The unique shape of the leaves, resembling leaping dolphins, makes this plant a popular decorative choice believed to bring joy and whimsy into the home. It’s often gifted to plant lovers who enjoy its playful appearance and relatively easy care.
